We're Down But Not Out!

Well, we're busily working in the new building to get back up and operating by February 1st! We have 37 new artisan/vendors working to get moved into the new shop and so excited about being "in the mix" at The Shoppes At The Grapevine!
We can hardly wait to open our doors again and welcome everyone into the awesome building! Although we are currently operating out of a back room at 211 Trade Street we do not want our wonderful customers thinking we've forgotten them! Renovation Nearing Completion!

Well, it's a brand new year and I am totally psyched about the new home for The Grapevine! I understand quite a few of you have been peeping in the windows at 211 Trade Street and enjoying the continued progress of the renovation! Many of you have told me how excited you are for us; as the concrete floors are drying out and the painters will soon be finishing the trimming out of the walls and columns for the last of this amazing redo! We hope to begin our move over the week of January 15th with our current vendors and a fresh batch of new artists and retailers that will make up the new face of The Shoppes At The Grapevine! More details to come soon!

Sun Glass...What Is It?

No matter where I take it, customers always ask about my purple glass collection. Just like many others I didn't know about purple glass until I talked to another collector/digger and found out how unique it was. Purple glass or "Sun Glass" as many call it, came about from glass ware that was crafted prior to World War I. The U.S. glass industry had discovered that by adding manganese to their formula, the glass came out clear and less likely to have that greenish tint that glass had prior to this change. What they didn't realize was that over time the glass would turn purple if exposed to the sun rays. The U.S. glass industry was importing it's manganese from Germany prior to WWI and stopped once Germany entered the war. They didn't use it again. So any purple glass that you find is always at least 95 years old at this point. Most of the purple glass found is not in it's darkest shade, often times it's dug out of the ground around old homesteads and hasn't been in the sunlight. The collector I get my glass from actually sends his glass bottles to a sanitizing company that runs the bottle thru a UV ray machine which turns the bottles into their deepest shades of lavender and purple. In an age when virtually everything was stored or sold in glass as it's packaging, you'll find everything from "snuff" bottles to chili sauce to soda pop. I love to sit the bottles on a sunny window ledge to catch the rays and watch the prisms that they can create! Start your own collection by purchasing some of our purple bottles at The Grapevine! Upcycled Clothing A New Trend!

This amazing embellished jacket is the work of our resident "textile artist", Jeanne B. A longtime crafter of quilts, knitwork, weaving and more, Jeanne became interested in the upcycled clothing trend after already being a fan of recycling and being able to reuse clothing fabrics for weaving and knitting. "There's just something about fabric after it's been washed and washed again, it gets that soft, lived in feeling that can make a knitted shawl so soft and so comfortable"! A lifelong knitter, Dorothy, 81, lives in England and knits all these great soft toys by hand! She sends "her babies" from England to her daughter here in Greer, who brings them to The Grapevine! The 21 Days Of Christmas Giving!

Well, like it or not, we're already at day 4 and counting of this holiday season! If you're like me, you're still trying to get the house decorated; and tomorrow should work better I believe!
So if gift-giving and entertaining have you stumped; let me pass along some nifty ideas. Over the next 3 weeks, we will be posting daily gift ideas to help make your holiday more enjoyable and less stressful!
If you are trying to come up with some unique decorations for the home and love the cottage garden look, check out this tip from one of our vendors, Susan of At Home. Decorating your mantel year round can be much easier when you start with a basic naturalistic greenery (sprigs, vines, etc) first. Layer the mantel with the greenery, I like to use Susan's mossy ribbon, grapevine twig swag and some trailing ivy vines. I then begin to add the seasonal color with a festive Eucalyptus & Bittersweet swag she has for sale at The Grapevine.

At this point you are free to start filling in with any sort of decorative treatments you like, such as the gorgeous recycled Tin Angels from the At Home Holiday collection. If you are having folks over to your home, just cut or buy some fresh evergreen such as cedar boughs or boxwood clips and tuck them into the faux greenery to give the whole decoration even more natural beauty and fresh holiday scent!
When Christmas is over, leave your faux evergreens and add in other seasonal decor such as Snowmen for the winter season or colored eggs and florals for Spring. You'll never have a boring mantel again!

News At The Grapevine...

Well, "the cat is finally out of the bag" as they say (he's obviously been hanging out with my 7 m.o. kitty, he gets in bags a lot); and the buzz on Trade Street is The Grapevine is expanding!
That's right! The renovation at 211 Trade Street started this past week and many of the walls are already down inside the building!
If you haven't heard yet, The Grapevine is expanding and we are just a month away from becoming The Shoppes At The Grapevine. We are taking on additional vendors with even more gifts, accessories, home decor, antiques and artwork! The new store is expected to become a destination for shoppers of all kinds as we will offer such a wide variety of unique and interesting finds!
We are still accepting applications for more vendors and are also looking for someone interested in operating the Bistro Cafe located within the building. For additional info or to pick up an application, call us at 864 879 4222!
In preparation for the move, The Grapevine plans to be open thru 8pm on Friday December 23rd. After which we will be closed thru January 4th and will reopen on January 5th in the newly renovated building at 211 Trade Street. I don't know if you're excited but we can hardly wait for the move! Tis The Season...

That's right! It's the season for lost bank cards and "would somebody call my cellphone! I looked at the calendar and Thanksgiving was last week! O.K. Take a deep breath and think s-l-o-w thoughts! W-h-e-r-e h-a-s t-h-e t-i-m-e g-o-n-e, a-l-r-e-a-d-y! That was fun! Well, anyway, thanks to all of our wonderful customers for making "Shop Small Saturday" truly awesome at The Grapevine! So many of you dropped in to say "hello" and to tell us that you came to make your purchase in support of "Shop Small"! We saw attendance and sales more than double over last year's event! I should have snapped a picture but was too busy ringing up purchases! Believe me, we were in SRO mode! If you didn't get to come by, you have another awesome opp this weekend as downtown Greer celebrates their Christmas tree lighting. The Grapevine will be open until 8pm Friday evening with yummies to snack on and more delightful gift ideas for those on your Christmas list. Did I say Christmas List? Oh my gosh, it can't be!! Back from Charlotte...on to our Holiday Open House!

Well, just as soon as we returned from the fall show at the Charlotte Antiques & Collectibles Event this past Monday, it was on to our Holiday Open House at The Grapevine! Most of our vendors spent the week filling their spaces with lots of lovely new gift ideas and helping to spruce up the shop in preparation for the Thursday event.

The evening saw many visitors coming in right after work to taste the yummy treats and see all the wonderful offerings from our 15 unique vendors such as At Home, Serendipity, Salvage Interiors, Head 2 Toe 4 Kids, Sally B, Gifts At The Creek and Fabulosa just to name a few!
Many folks came as guests of others and it was their first visit to the shop, but surely not their last!

Lynn Scott, owner of the Butter Bath Company talks with some of our visitors about her popular, all-natural bath & body products currently being sold in the shop. This past year Lynn expanded her line at Whole Foods in Greenville and moved into West Spartanburg's Bee Healthy shop. But you can get her fabulous products right here in downtown Greer at The Grapevine! They make wonderful stocking stuffers and gifts for that special person on your list!

The evening was capped off with several of our visitors winning give-aways from our vendors. Congrats to Pat, Kevin, Sullivan, Carolina, Vickie, Ron, Linda, Beth and Leslie who were chosen in our drawing! We hope you enjoy your prizes from The Grapevine, thank you all for being a part of our seasonal celebration!

Country Living Fair was a blast!

My daughter and I had an awesome time at the Country Living Fair in Stone Mt. Park, near Atlanta, Ga. this past weekend! After driving down on Friday afternoon, we checked out a few antique shops in Chamblee. We got the opportunity to visit with Noel at Dryads Dancing while we purchased new products for the shop. He was a hoot! Then we headed on over to downtown Decatur, Ga. to find supper. We settled on a funky mexican bistro, and I ate enough guacamole and chips for 3 people! It was good but uhhg, I felt like throwing up most of the night. That will teach me to eat too much!

After a good night's rest we were ready to head to the Fair. Lots of gorgeous visual delights greeted us as we perused the paths through the lovely wooded areas where the show was located. I kept oohing and ahhing every few yards, and asking Caroline to snap a pic of something!

Over 150 vendors were there with lots of vintage, repurposed, handcrafted and retail items! We even saw some familiar faces. Patrick & Karen of South Porch Antiques in Texas were there and selling very reasonably priced collectibles and restyled items. These guys were at Marburger Farm in the Spring for the Warrenton/Roundtop Tx. show, when we were there. I also got to visit with Nancy of Sassy Trash, whom I met at the Bella Rustica Fair in Franklin, TN. Her amazing booth was full of awesome recycled metal and vintage creations. Finally I got to meet Cari Cucksey of HGTV's "Cash and Cari"! Her great space was full of lots of repurposed practical decor items and furniture pieces she creates for her business, Repurposed. She's a super nice lady as you can see from the photo!

Shopping wasn't the only thing on the menu. There were demonstrations from "The Fabulous Beekman Boys"
and much more on cooking, decorating, etc. By 4 pm we were worn out, so we started driving back home. The weekend was really fun and a well needed break for me and my daughter!

It's Oktoberfest Time!

The fun begins at 12 noon till 10pm. Satisfy your shopping habit at The Grapevine as we will be open during the festival with many celebration specials!

Bella Rustica, Here We Come!

Well, we arrived at "Bella Rustica" near Franklin, TN around 9:00 am on Thursday after an all night drive from Greer, SC. The beautiful setting for the event is Tap Root Farm, a working horse and cattle ranch plus event center! My traveling buddies Roger, Rebecca and myself got busy unloading the trailer to set up the booth. The weather had cooled off tremendously, but it was a nice change from the SC heat we'd been dealing with!

By lunchtime we were starved and delighted to find out that AGAPE was feeding us! A local caterer provided a yummy BBQ meal on the lawn in front of the 100 year old plus, Ingram farm house. So delicious! Many thanks to Linda Lindley for thinking of our tummies! After lunch we returned to piecing together my booth in the huge tent outside of the barn and stables that had been transformed into a rustic shopper's wonderland! Before we knew it, the old clock on the wall said 4:30pm and we were worn out!
We knew that Friday was going to be an early one, so we decided to head back to our friend Darrell's apartment near Nashville, for the evening.
Roger and I set out very early Friday morning trying to miss Nashville rush-hour traffic and make it to Franklin for the "early-bird" crowds expected. We were 15 minutes late but we got to meet our neighbor across the aisle, Michael of Vintage West Trading Company. He had graciously set some things aside for the early shoppers already descending on our space! Thanks Michael! By the way, he creates some fabulous "restyled vintage" illuminated signs! The early-bird shoppers were standing in line to get in and we were swamped for the first 2 hours with no break! But it was awesome watching things fly out of the space! Autumn Lynn Photography caught me replenishing stock and snapped one for Bella Rustica's blog spot! Later in the afternoon, Roger and I took a break while one of the "too kind" Agape volunteers took care of our space. We wanted to try one of the hot off-the-grill
beef burgers that Tap Root Farm is famous for. As expected they were tasty! We enjoyed our little respite out behind the barn watching the kettle corn pop and the kiddies ride horses! But duty calls and we trekked back to our space, thanked our volunteer and got back to work! As the wonderful shoppers kept us busy, the gorgeous sunny afternoon quickly passed. We met so many nice people, so supportive of the event and Agape Services! Soon it was time to call it a day and head back to the apartment! Both Roger and myself had a great sales day, the customers loved our offerings! We were very pleased with the first day of Bella Rustica, and were looking forward to the second day!
On Saturday, Rebecca and Darrell joined us and we headed back to Tap Root Farm. Again as Friday, the shoppers were in line waiting to get in! When you travel as far as we did to do an event, folks waiting in line to enter is always so encouraging!
So we got busy helping customers with their purchases and talking to folks about how we got to Bella Rustica! Throughout the afternoon I got time to get away and meet some of the other wonderful vendors that made up this wonderful event enjoy the beautiful vignettes that made up the
grounds of the "barn yard".

Still basking in the glow of their appearance in the pages of "Flea Market Style", Three French Hens offered up an awesome collection of Paris flea market finds , re-purposed creations, antiques and American primitives. I got to talk with Stacy, one of the hens and found her to be just as friendly as your next door neighbor!

My buddy Rebecca had told me to check out "The Fancy Flea" and it's owner Peggy. I enjoyed talking shop with her and finding out about some Nashville events that I'm sure I'll want to check out in the months ahead! Thanks Peggy!
Of course, I had to find Beth from the "Olde Tyme Marketplace". I originally met her through her blog and she's the one that encouraged me to apply for Bella! She and Wendy had transformed one of the stables into an amazing shopper's paradise! Loved it!
Another blogger I discovered on the net, but had not got to meet was artisan/junker, Nancy, from "Sassy Trash"! Her amazing re-purposed creations have landed her a spot in the upcoming Country Living Fair in Atlanta. Looking forward to seeing her space there also when I get visit in October!

There was so much to see at Bella Rustica and it couldn't have happened without the dedication of Linda Lindley, Art Woods and the myriad of volunteers to see this wonderful charity event through!
I'm so looking forward to their "2nd annual barn sale event" next year!

Packing It Up for Bella Rustica!

Well, it's finally here! The week I've been anxiously looking forward to, Bella Rustica, the great "barn sale" in Franklin, TN. Even though it's been cra-azy this week, I'm really expecting this show to be huge! And that's a good thing! We started packing the trailer on Monday and I think my kitty Sami wants to go with me! Or maybe he'd like to buy one of the fabulous rustic wooden stars I'm taking to the show! Anyway, we're hitting the road very early (yawn) Thursday morning so we can get set up!
And there's still time for anyone who's looking for a great new venue to shop! The Bella Rustica event will benefit Agape Services of Nashville, a great christian ministry to families and children. It's this Friday and Saturday at the big barn on Tap Root Farm near the too charming downtown of Franklin. There'll be lots of vendors displaying their old, new and somewhere in-between finds, looking like we just opened the pages of Country Living! Projects Galore....

Well, it's Labor Day and guess what, I've been laboring all day! Working on more items for the Bella Rustica show, planned for September 16th and 17th. We can hardly wait since we're sure this is going to be a beautiful, fun show set in a barn on the Tap Root Farm near Franklin, TN. Here's what we've been working on today and there's more yet to do!
Left to Right: Prim Christmas trees fashioned from vintage quilt scraps and cotton mill spindles; burlap pillow with teal satin ribbon; hand soap dispensers created from vintage pint-size fruit jars with stainless steel pump; and cool game card letters that spell H-O-M-E!

Unexpected Detour....

Well, I got an totally unexpected detour in my show plans last week as I ended up in the ER with chest pain early Tuesday morning. Yes, it was scary since I didn't think I had any "new" heart problems! The ER doctor decided to send me to the Sptbg Regional Heart Center since I was last treated by a Sptbg. Cardiology practice. So I was transported to the heart center about 6:30 am and admitted for treatment. Long story, short; it was determined my heart was "stuck" in an atrial flutter rhythm and I underwent a cardiac ablation to correct the problem. Released on Thursday afternoon, I have been recuperating at home. It did keep me from being able to attend the Antique Fair in Hillsville, Va; but I do appreciate the blessing of good health! Many thanks to those who were so kind with their phone calls and emails! I'm now looking toward my next event, Bella Rustica in Franklin, TN.

Well, I spent the day on the road today as I visited some of my favorite vendors at Metrolina Antiques Fair in Charlotte, NC. Thanks Jay, for the lovely purple bottles! These are one of my best sellers at The Grapevine!

I then drove over to Marshville, NC, a few miles past Monroe off of Hwy 74 East. I wanted to visit Beth at The Olde Tyme Marketplace. After checking out her blog, I felt a kinship and wanted to see what her place looked like. After driving through "stop and go" tax-free weekend traffic for 1 hour and 15 minutes, I was happy to get to Marshville! The Olde Tyme Marketplace was just as I thought it might be and Beth is a sweetie! The 100 year old plus building was originally a storefront on N.White Street and still has the awesome front porch that many of these turn-of-the-century shops sported. The building is filled to the brim with awesomely displayed shabby, vintage, and primitive finds. You'll love the great chippy-peely shutters, screen doors and windows Beth puts together, along with charming farm-style furniture pieces that just breathe "cottage"! Once a month, she invites other lovers of vintage, junky, prim, and rusty treasures to gather for "Sunday At The Marketplace". Everybody brings their favorite pieces and sets up for the monthly sale, now in it's 3rd year!
The next sale date is Sunday, August 14th, 11am - 5pm.
This pleasant shop in Marshville is worth the drive from anywhere,

Well, I finally got started on my new batch of items to upcycle and re-furbish for my next event in Hillsville, Va. This show is huge, it's in it's 42 year on Labor Day weekend; and the whole town basically becomes a fleamarket & antiques show! I'm excited because this is my first year as a vendor! I've been a visitor for several years and have dragged friends with me on the excursions, so this will be a different experience for me! Thanks to my sister and bro-in-law for putting me up in their comfy travel trailer!

I'm currently working on a great little wooden game table and 2 folding chairs that look like someone pulled them out of a sweet french courtyard where two old bearded frenchmen were playing chess on it! So cute! As seen in the pics above, I am using a distressed paint technique on the chairs and I'm hoping to cover the top of the table with tin tiles, since the veneer was toast! With the current heat wave, I'm working early in the morning before heading to the shop! Tell me what you think!

Adorable Vintage Buttons Accessories!

Lula Belle Studios has created these adorable hairpins mostly from vintage buttons, many from the 40's and 50's! Lula Belle rummages through estate sale boxes and even antique shows to find the unique mother-of-pearl, glass, old celluloid and bakelite (vintage plastic) buttons. She then puts them together in colorful combinations to make her hairpins and barrettes. Lula Belle was recently at the "Upcycled Living Fair" and you can see her collection now at The Grapevine in downtown Greer!

Well, it's finally here, and we're so excited! The "Upcycled Living Fair & Market is this Saturday and Sunday, 25th and 26th at Poinsett West Gardens, 1013 W. Poinsett Street in Greer, SC!

Calling All Junkers and Prom Queens!

Well as promised, I'm back with more from the Warrenton Spring Antiques Week! We sure did shake our tail feathers last night at the Junk-a-rama Prom, sponsored by the Junk Gypsies! We were rocking and rolling with the John Evans Band, a local favorite! I just wish I could get someone to teach me the Texas Two Step!
Here I am just before the gig got started in my vintage red ladies slip, courtesy of my dear friend, Rebecca! This year we noticed more folks showing up in truly unique costumes, like the cave people, the pink haired floozies and
the two Amigos, what a crazy bunch! And speaking of crazy! What fun Esther had, getting to know an unidentified guy's pet duck. He looked a lot like the AFLAC duck and he seemed just as talented as he "hugged" his owner, passed a "high five" to Esther and waved bye-bye!
What a hoot!
This morning we came back to Warrenton to put our SC sticker on the Junk Gypsies pink Chevy Surburban, Marge. The Gypsyville gals had been asking everyone coming to the fair to bring a sticker so Marge could get herself all gussied up. Esther and I took our sticker over to Marge and planted it on the driver side rear side window, while Lori snapped our photo.

After saying our good-byes we moved on to Round Top, a few miles down Hwy 237. Here we are at the oldest tree in the area, a gi-normous live oak with it's branches touching the ground in many areas. The village that surrounds it are the recon-structed antique homes from other areas in Fayette county that were brought here along with the original hand-hewn log building known as Moore's Fort, constructed in 1831. At Round Top we had to get a piece of Royer's Cafe fresh pie, it is "to die for". We all got different flavors so we could sample one another's, yum!

After taking a break with our pie we moved on to the Marburger Farm Show. We missed this one last fall but we did want to check it out this visit. It is probably the most popular show drawing designers from all over the U.S. to the displays that make you feel like you stepped into a magazine!
I picked up items from Bluebird Lane and Tobacco Road Antiques and visited the really cool shop, Rubbish. After having some lunch, we looked around a bit more and then moved on up the highway. I found a gorgeous vintage birdcage at one show, which will make a nice display for my metal birds and the "Time Flies" art piece. From there, we moved on to La Bahia (pronounced La-bahay). This venue is held on the grounds of an old meeting house constructed in 1871 under the mossy draped oaks not far from Hwy 290. Since it was getting into the evening, it was really comfortable under the oaks with the breezes gently moving the spanish moss around.
Reluctantly, we needed to get started back to Houston, where we would fly
out in the morning, so we had to get back on the road after visiting the vendors. Ellen's Timeless Treasures and the Old Oak Cottage were two of our favorites. I think the entire show has gotten bigger, and we definately, could have used one more day!
We've thoroughly enjoyed our second visit to the Lone Star State and the Spring Antiques Fair. And we're already are missing the laid back, friendly folks from the hill country of Texas!

Thursday in Warrenton!

Well, we were up bright and early at our hotel in Schulenberg about 30 miles from the show. One of our first tasks of the day was to have breakfast which was pretty tasty actually. We just had to share a pic of the Texas-sized waffles that were served, what a hoot!

After packing away lots of carbs we head out to Warrenton, where the show pretty much starts! This was Esther's first trip to Texas so everything along the way amazed her! Soon we found ourselves stepping in and out of sale spaces overwhelmed by so many interesting things to look at. We started finding things right away. We all loved the colorful tin butterflies created by Linda Hamilton in her "Texas Trash & Treasures", I was going to make magnets out of mine for the shop! We checked out a great mother-daughter team from Arkansas, who call themselves "Twang & Twig". This was their first show and they said that they were really happy about how they'd done so far! Caroline was definately, trying to figure out how to get their old aluminum stretcher case/coffee table onto our plane back home! We talked a bit about how we all got started in re-purposing and before we knew it was lunchtime! We all had been smelling the bar-b-q all morning, so we mosied on over to Lone Star Bar B Q, cause them guys can whip up some dang good brisket! Here's Esther enjoying her loaded baked potato heaped

There sure weren't any leftovers at our table!
After wandering a bit more and checking out the cool trailer homes some of the vendors live in and sell out of; we talked to Tricia Samuels of "Vintage Bliss" about her re-vamped airstream and she let us take pics! Just too cute! Thanks Tricia!

The girls had slipped off to the Junk Gypsies Tent and won during the trivia contest! Those were the biggest chocolate ding dongs I've ever seen! But you know what they say about Texas, everything's bigger! After another hour or so, Caroline and Esther were just plum tuckered out and were feeling the effects of a sugar coma! So they plopped down on a bench inside Zapp Hall and decided to camp there for awhile! So I continued to look around for the rest of the afternoon just overwhelmed by all the amazing ingenuity and talent. I went back after the girls because it was time to get "gussied up" for the Junk-a-rama Prom. We pretty much had to change our road clothes in the porta-john, and that was quite an acrobatic feat in itself! We went to take advantage of the snacks and champagne bellinis near Royers' Cafe at Zapp Hall before all the fun began. While standing there munching, I noticed three ladies standing nearby, and one looked remarkable like Sue Whitney, who is one of the original "JunkMarket Queens".
I told Caroline and Esther that lady sure looks like Sue Whitney
and Caroline agreed. I finally said, o.k., I'm just going to ask her!
I stepped over and ask if she was Sue Whitney and she answered "why yes, I am". I just about flipped out! This was one of my heroes, one of my reasons for getting interested in junkmarket style! I bought her first two books! She was so nice, introducing me to her daughter and her neice and explaining that they were doing a "girl's weekend". I said we were too and how this had made my entire trip! She hugged me and told me to communicate more on the Junkmarket Online site and that would help others get to know me and I should email her too! Caroline made our picture together
and they went on their way!
I had to pinch myself and look at the picture again just to believe it! Wow! Well, we're heading over to the Prom, I'll write more later!

We're down to 40 hours!

That's right, 40 hours till we'll fly out to Texas, the Warrenton Antiques Roundup, halfway between Houston and Austin, is our planned destination! I don't know if you'll find 3 other girls as excited as us! We've got our bags just about packed and our boots are shined! We'll be blogging along the way as we tramp through the grounds of some 60 shows. Looking forward to getting to see some FB buddies and some Etsy friends. And of course the Junk-a-rama Prom along with the "Bellinis and Bargains" shopping night are the highlights of our visit! We'll keep you all posted! Well as many of you know, I've been talking about our upcoming trip to the "Lone Star State" for several weeks! We're so excited about the Warrenton Antiques Roundup! After our fall trip we could hardly wait for another opportunity to return; and thanks to Southwest Airlines, we got a sweet deal on air tickets back!
Now in it's 40th year, the event is considered one of the premier shows in the U.S.! With hundreds of vendors offering antiques of every kind, all sorts of salvage market decor, artwork, ecetera; we're sure to stay busy walking all the fields, stockyards and quaint towns along Hwy 237 to see everything. I'm hoping to bring back to The Grapevine as much as I can pack into my extra luggage. So everyone can expect lots of new items when I get back! And of course, we can hardly wait to attend the Junk-a-Rama Prom, sponsored by "The Junk Gypsies"! We've got our cowgirl boots, petticoats and other "tacky" accessories required for admission and are planning to two-step the night away as local favorite musicians perform! We'll be sure to post our pics and tales of our adventures "deep in the heart of Texas"!

Today's rain was indeed a downer but I'm still feeling sunshiney because I have plans. That's right, 20 more days and I'll be headed to Texas again! This time for the spring antiques and crafts show known as "The Texas Roundup". We'll be visiting the strip of small towns along highway 237 between Houston and Austin, that experience a surge in population every year about this time as thousands arrive for the Marburger Farm/Round Top Spring show.

I'll be joined by my "cohorts in crime", my daughter Caroline and her sister-in-law Esther . I hope to get lots of great ideas for the shop and enjoy all the fun events that go along with the show. I'm sure I'll be checking in daily on the blog and letting you know what's happening with our little trio! And anybody who has a pair of size 10 cowgirl boots for rent should let me know asap!

The Next Big Thing...

Hi Everyone, it's that time of the year again, when we start packing up and taking our show on the road again! Well, to Charlotte, NC that is. It's the International Antiques Expo held the first weekend of each month at the original Metrolina Fairgrounds off of I-77. It's a great mixed venue with antiques as the mainstay, and I fit in pretty good with my salvage/farmhouse/cottage look! I started out going there when my business was young and I still had the freedom to take off for 3 to 4 days. This time I'm taking my friend, Rebecca with me; she has a large amount of vintage glassware, toys, and textiles from family collections that she just can't keep anymore. And I'm taking some pieces from my shop along with some new items. We'll be in Building C, space F-6 from Friday morning till Sunday afternoon, so come on up if you're looking for something to do! And if you can't get to Charlotte, check out the shop this weekend in downtown Greer. Thanks to my helpers, Caroline, Melba and Jan for running things there for me. Kissy, Kissy, girlfriends!

Just a shout out to one of our favorite customers, a local news reporter, who will be serving as the mistress of ceremonies at a local black tie event this Saturday evening. Remember that song? Oh yeah, not all of my readers may be old enough to remember the song. Darn, I hate admitting that! But anyway, the song was real popular in the late 60's, maybe very early 70's. "What The World Needs Now Is Love, Sweet Love" simply echoed what is still important nearly 40 years later. All you have to do is look at a newspaper; well, on second thought... Yes, Valentine's is just about over for this year, but you can continue to spread love in the months ahead. If you look for love-needy people, you will find them. Share a smile or part of your lunch, it's all the same; someone else feels loved. And if everything works perfectly, they may even find someone who needs a little love, too!

He was later sainted and early on the holiday was known as St.Valentine's Day. Through the centuries we somehow attached all the romantic images of cupids and hearts to what we know today.

The Weather Outside Is Frightful...

Hello To All,
Well by now you too, maybe "snowed in"! We hope you were able to get plenty of bread and milk before the storm! We're just enjoying the extra long weekend and working on some long overdue projects, which I hope to bring to the shop very soon! I've posted a couple of photos my daughter took of our 125 y.o. farmhouse and the barn near the woods covered in snow! Snow always makes everything look so clean and fresh!
As mentioned in an earlier post we are making a few changes at The Grapevine; including 2 new vendors that create very interesting up-cycled items and an artist that works in several mediums including metals, leather and fabric jewelry accessories. We're also moving around some of our items for vintage living for a whole new look! We hope you'll visit us soon; well, after the snow melts of course!

Turn Around and It's 2011!

Here we are, 2 days into the brand new 2011! Did you make any resolutions? Well, I did, I'm joining the gym again! Operating the shop takes a lot of my time of course and exercise has fallen to the bottom of my list during 2010. At least I can be sure I'll be getting some exercise 2 or 3 days a week!
On the shop front, we'll be making a few changes at The Grapevine soon. We have two new vendors that will join us this month! Diane Harvey of Artiztic Designs will be offering her adorable doggie beds created from unique furniture decor and many vintage items like suitcases! She also crafts unusual art accessories from old 33 RPM albums and their paper covers, you gotta see them!
Jeanne Brown of "Quilts n' Quaints" will be showcasing her lovely quilted throws, altered couture fashion accessories & jewelry along with hand-loomed shawls and wraps. If you're into upcycled and organic fashion accessories, then Jeanne is your source!
We are also planning to offer an assortment of teas, coffees and accessories soon! This will allow our customers to sample local farm direct sources for these refreshments and also be able to create gift packages for purchase!
Lastly, but most importantly The Grapevine wishes to thank all of our wonderful customers that helped to make 2010 our best year yet! We hope you'll continue to spread the word of the unique gift shop in downtown Greer!

Another Year Is Past Us...

Well, here we are about to bid goodbye to another year...when it seems we were just welcoming it. You know how you find yourselves turning into your parents as you get older? Well, it seems I remember my mother saying.."you just wait, when you are grown up you'll wish time would slow down, instead of wishing things would always hurry up"! I do believe she was right, but then your parents may have said that too, parents are like that, you know. As I look back over this year, I think about how we celebrated my 50th birthday. I never imagined myself beyond 40. Not that I didn't want to be 50 eventually, I just never imagined that far ahead. I also noticed that I'm telling my daughter more about historical events that I've lived through and how I remember them. Gees, I'm not even a grandparent yet!
As the hours are slipping away, I wonder what the New Year will bring us. In 2011, I can only hope for more peace, less conflict, more love and less hate, more light and less darkness, for these can bring the only true fulfillment. I wish you and yours the blessings of a gracious God who loves us all!

Twas The Night Before...

Christmas... that is. You guessed it; the last week just got away from me and here we are on Christmas Eve! Having hosted my siblings and their families earlier this evening, we are now sitting here, stuffed to the gills with all kinds of holiday goodies, weary of movies and looking forward to a long winter's nap! I hope that you were able to spend the evening and especially tommorrow with those you love and care about, basking in the blessings that we've been given! We want to thank all those of you that have helped to make this year our best yet for The Grapevine. We have seen an amazing increase in repeat business with many telling us that they love coming to The Grapevine because we always have something new and unique! This is the reason we have seen the growth over this past year that has helped to make us more popular than ever!

I just made my mind up that it was the days before the 25th, so today is the 9th day of Christmas. Hi All!
Many thanks to 2 of my great vendors, Melba and Susan who volunteered time at the shop this week, so I could work on some more great junkmarket decor! Also, my sweet friend Rebecca helped today so I could take some time to run errands, which took all of my day! Now after painting for 4 hours in my bathroom this evening, I am exhausted!
But as promised, we want to spotlight another one of our unique vendors at The Grapevine!
"Dorothy's Dolls" is 80 year old Dorothy Snowball, resident of London, England. A lifelong knitter, Dorothy has been sending her hand-knitted "dolls" to her daughter Anne, now living in Greer for several years. Anne hasn't had any trouble selling them to friends, who rave about them! Now, these adorable dolls are at The Grapevine! We're sure you know someone who will treasure one of Dorothy's dolls, especially this Christmas!

Hello Everyone!
Well, can you believe we are already 8 days into December and only 16 shopping days left till Christmas?! I can't! It seems the older we get the faster Christmas comes and goes! I just got my outdoor lights up last weekend and I hope to get the indoor decor and the tree, of course up this weekend. I hope you're finding enjoyment in the holiday and making some nice memories with those that matter the most to you!
Be sure and drop by to see us at the shop if you have a chance, we have lots of new items from many of our vendors along with a couple of new vendors, one of which is "Cool, Funky Gifts".
Just in, are the too cute doggie beds and pooch palaces artfully created by Diane Harvey, another local small business owner. Well, Thanksgiving is behind us and the Christmas holiday is in full-swing now. And I, like many of you am still trying to figure out what happened to Fall? It seemed we were just in the middle of a hot dry summer and then Christmas music! Oh well, don't worry, in 3 weeks and 1 day, Christmas 2010 will be history also! Time marches on and I hope you are living squarely in the "now" and are making memories with those that matter most to you! This is indeed the season when many get so caught up in the frivolity and presents that they totally miss the real presence, the real spirit of Christmas. So smile more today, thank someone for a mundane task, and tell a friend or family member just how special they are to you. Take some time to spend in a quiet spot and remember why you are here, to tell others.

Mx2 Designs will be at The Santa Shoppe in Spartanburg @ The Memorial Auditorium on Church Street. This event is sponsered by the Junior League of Sptbg. and is always a huge shopping extravaganza. You can visit the Mx2 girls on Thursday 10-4, Friday & Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 1-5. You'll be able to get the same unique "everyday" and holiday gifts you always find at The Grapevine! There is an admission charge which benefits Junior League projects.

Also, Lynn Scott, owner and creator of ButterBath products, "spa moments for everyday" will be at the Greater Simpsonville Holiday Fair, located at The Simpsonville Senior Center. Hello to all!

Sorry for the delay in posting but it's been really busy since we returned from our trip! Right now, we're excited to welcome a new vendor to The Grapevine, "Dorothy's Dolls". Dorothy's daughter Anne, brought us some of the adorable dolls that 80 year old resident of London knits in her native England. There's everything from Mother Goose characters to the famous British "Bobbies" (police officers). They are truly perfect in detail, as only a lifelong knitter could turn out! Anne has been selling them for sometime now, to friends and acquaintances who rave about them; while Dorothy usually donates them to "charity shops" that support cancer research in the UK. You can get yours at The Grapevine, so come on by and check them out after the first of November!

Also new in the shop are the handmade hair adornments being created by Lula Belle Studios. Created from vintage buttons, fabric, lace, etc. these embellished hair accessories are truly a special adornment for your lovely locks!

You'll also find some of your favorite vendors at The Grapevine are expanding their inventory! New Beginnings and Fabulouso Jewelry will be bringing in more wonderful items including monogrammed accessories, along with even more handbags and jewelry to choose from!

Back to Austin...

Well, on Sunday morning we headed back to Austin to wind up our trip. After googling the map and riding around some (Caroline likes to call it "accidental traveling"), we got on the trail to SoCo. This trendy neighborhood across the river is named for it's main street address, South Congress Avenue. We found some parking near the Austin Motel Court, a refurbished motel originally built in the early 50's. Apparently, it's the place the stay in Austin now if you can come up with $200 a night. They boast many celebrity visitors including Julia Roberts and Bruce Springsteen. The streets were busy with people enjoying brunch in the cafes and just shopping. An artisan market across the street was filled with handmade jewelry, artwork and performing musicians. After wandering for awhile we decided to get some real TexMex food at Guero's, a local favorite. The food was tasty but my heat level for salsa was pretty whimpy, even for their "mild" version. After a bit more shopping, we headed toward the airport. This has been a real adventure for us, we loved Texas and hope to return next year or maybe sooner!

Well, hello again! It's Saturday night and our great adventure is ending, for now. But just to recap our last day at the Fall Antiques Show in Texas. Today we took a sidetrip into Brenham, TX to visit the Bluebell Creameries. So after lunch and a bit of shopping at the cute shops; we drove over get some of their fabulous ice cream. At only $1 per scoop, we should have gone with empty tummies! I had 2 scoops, Mocha Almond Fudge and Moolenium Crunch, yummy!! Caroline, played it safe with Rocky Road, a longstanding fav! After making a couple of pics with the antique delivery truck in front of the visitor's center; we then started our trip back to the well-traveled 237 into Round Top and Warrenton one more time. By now everyone that hadn't been to the show by now showed up and the traffic was horrendous! But most of the folks were courteous and would give way to others. It was fun to see the police officers on horses by now wandering through the vendor lots keeping an eye on everything...just like in the frontier days! After making the rounds one more time, being sure we picked up all the good deals we headed back to our hotel, and got ready to bed down for our last night in Texas. We'll return to Austin tommorrow, where we will fly home.

Hello again from the Roundtop area Fall Antique Show!
Well, we started our day with breakfast at our hotel in Bastrop (yes, it's a real town named that), Texas. I've gotten my tongue tangled at least once, and you can imagine what I called it!
Anyway, we got back on the road and after spending a bit more time in Warrenton, we moved on to Roundtop. Here we checked out Roundtop's own little Main Street with it's hugely popular Royer's Roundtop Cafe. Once an old gas station, the building sports that retro Route 66 look with it old neon lighting and aquamarine painted walls. We soon found out that Royer's claim to fame is it's extensive homemade, fresh baked pie menu. It was tough but we finally chose Strawberry-Rhubarb and OMGosh, it nearly made us faint from it's deliciousness! The picture of me taking it away from Caroline, was totally staged, of course! As the afternoon passed, we checked out the numerous shows along Hwy 237, including Blue Hills, Cole's, The Red Barn, Marburger Farm Roundup and onto Carmine, where the Carmine Dance Hall show is very popular.

Emily of Emily & Co., a cute shop adjacent to the dance hall gave us a tip on another good spot for dealers in an area called La Bahia (pronounced: La-Baha-yah). We checked it out and I made some purchases there and saw some more great decor ideas that I'm sure I'll bring back to The Grapevine! By the time we finished up there it was getting late and folks were closing for the day. We drove back to Bastrop and found some supper since we were starved! And now we're getting ready to bed down for the night. I've got to stop this "cowboy lingo"! We'll be back tommorrow evening after we visit Brenham, Texas, home to Bluebell Ice Cream and then backtrack through the shows from there back to Roundtop tommorrow.

Adventures in Texas...

Well, hello to you all from the "Lone Star State", that's right, Texas! I am officially on vacation this week! As many of you know my daughter and I planned a trip to check out the Fall Antique Show in the hill country of Texas, about 30 miles east of Austin. I have read alot about this huge bi-yearly show held along hwy 237 between Warrenton and Brenham, Texas. It's all about antiques, vintage collectibles, junk and much more. Some of the blogs I follow speak of this as the one event they don't want to miss! I especially wanted to know more about the Junk Gypsies, a mom and her 2 daughters that have a funky, chic store in the Austin area. They come to this show regularly and have gotten a reputation for having an awesome mix of junktiques along with cowgirl chic wear and decor!
We got to Warrenton this afternoon around 2pm and started checking out the landscape right away! We were overwhelmed by all the great dealers that come in from all over Texas and further afield; bringing with them everything under the sun it seemed! All the amazing offerings gave me many great decor ideas, I'm sure I'll bring back to The Grapevine! After a bit I was able to find the "Junk Gypsies" tent (top photo), and was surprised to find that Rachel Ashwell, "the queen of shabby-chic" was visiting the Gypsies and signing her new book! That was not our only discovery though, we also found out that the Junk Gypsies Cowgirl Prom was this evening! Dang it, I knew I was suppose to bring my cowgirl boots!! We decided to take a break since our early lunch was long gone. We found Lone Star BarBQ not to far over from the Gypsies. After some killer "texas-style" beef brisket, we were ready to return to the "hunt"! After checking out more of the fascinating vendors, it was time for the Junk-A-Rama Prom to get started. I've never seen so many women walking around in bits and pieces of tacky prom dresses, lingerie, feather boas, tons of jewelry and western boots! Well, after enjoying a couple of champagne cocktails and listening to some really cool bands, we decided to call it a day. We need to get an early start tommorrow so we can cover more ground between Warrenton and Roundtop, our next adventure! We'll let you know how that turns out! Gee, I just can't seem to get "All my exs live in Texas out of my head now...!

Well, as you can see, the cake was yummy! We had an awesome time on Saturday and we did miss you if you were'nt able to get by! It was super to see so many of our wonderful customers! We have several winners in our drawing and so far Helen Pruitt was the winner of one of Sally B's lovely handmade floral pins; Kim Johnston took home a great pair of SuSu Jewelry's earrings; Kerri Robinson recieved one of Butterbath's all natural gift packs; Rhonda Turner was the winner of one of Fabulouso Jewelry's gorgeous pashminas; and Joy Barbare was the recipient of a lovely sterling silver pendant from New Beginnings Gifts & Accessories and Jennifer Caswell's little daughter Lila was the winner of a Head 2 Toe 4 Kids fun "princess halo"! I don't know about you all, but this has been one hot summer, and I'm looking forward to Fall! According to the calendar it's only 3 weeks away!
So,
The Grapevine is getting ready with the arrival of lots of great new Fall decor & gifts! "Mx2 Designs" has brought in great pumpkin stakes for your garden or plant containers, adorable squirrels created from natural organic materials, colorful leaf sprays and always popular willow branch lights. "At Home" has lots of cute table toppers and decorative pieces. Really unique pumpkin "critters", jack-o-lanterns created from twigs & branches, Thanksgiving turkey decor and too cute glass serving trays for your Fall gatherings! We will have regular hours this holiday weekend, till 8pm Friday night and Saturday till 4pm. So, don't miss out, come on by The Grapevine soon to get the best selection!

Hi Everyone!
There's been a lot going on this week at and around The Grapevine! More of our vendors have brought in fresh new merchandise for the fall months! You need to see the great new messenger bags and the kids and tweens jewelry; also, very soon we'll have colorful new lunch totes for the kids in adorable appliqued animals, sports, flowers, etc.!

Also kudos to Lynn Scott, creator of the Butterbath Company line of all-natural bath & body products! Last fall, Whole Foods Market picked up 3 of Lynn's products to carry in their Greenridge store. As their popularity has grown, WFM has now taken on several more of her products including her brand new "daily face scrub"! Just recently, Lynn was told that WFM wants to make Butterbath their sole local provider for all-natural bath & body products!! Of course, we're really happy for Lynn and hope all of her faithful customers in the Greer area will drop in The Grapevine to sample all of her new products, including this summer's best-smelling buy "Summertime" hand butter, bath salts and body powder!

And if you haven't had a chance this weekend to drop into the "Headhoods" show at The Gallery on Trade in downtown Greer, they will be there again on Sunday from 2pm to 6pm and on Monday from 10am - 6pm! Screen print artist and New Yorker Clinton Van DeMert will be displaying his signature hoodies, tees and tanks that are taking Brooklyn by storm! Also, current New Yorker aka. hometown girl (Sparklecity), Martha Ellen Mabry, stylist extrodenaire will be cutting hair for charity! Don't spend Sunday afternoon on the sofa, come on out and check out the really cool artistic clothing from Headhoods!!

Here's an FYI for some of my faithful "salvage style" devotees. We've just recently "set up shop" in Travelers Rest! We're excited about our boutique space inside of The Village @ 27 South Main! We've gathered up some of our most unique salvage style creations from Mason Jar Pendant Lamps to Vintage 78 Album Wall Clocks! These are sure to have folks asking where'd you find it? You'll find home & garden decor from our very own "Mx2 Designs" and "At Home"there, along with handbags, jewelry and gifts! Also, Leopard Forest Coffee House is soon to be relocating into 27 South Main offering their delicious South African coffees and beverages along with a yummy lunch menu! This cute shop would be a great stop on your next "Girls Day Out"! Their hours are Monday thru Saturday 10am-6pm, and they are just down the street from Sun Rift Adventures and Williams Hardware "Cafe", so check it out soon!

Hello again from The Grapevine!
Many of you have expressed interest in perhaps trying your hand at do-it-yourself salvage style projects or you just enjoy using salvage architectural pieces in your personal decorating scheme. I wanted to put the word out that I do currently have available doors, windows, shutters and lots of miscellaneous architectural trimmings. This great shelf was created from my own design and my husband Rick's carpentry skills out of salvaged beadboard and 100 y.o. corbels from an old house in Columbia, SC. So if you're interested in giving it a try, come by and see me at the shop. I don't have enough room there for all of my collection but I'd be happy to email pictures to you!
In other news, we had a busy weekend at The Grapevine! Lots of folks came out to the International Wine Festival on Saturday evening. This was a worthwhile event sponsored by The Cazbah in downtown Greer, was to benefit the "Make A Wish" Foundation! So we had lots of visitors to the shop, many for the first time! One of the favorite comments was, "what an adorable shop"! Another was, "we'll be back"! What about you? Have you checked out The Grapevine yet?
